Underage Round-Up

There were a good number of games this past weekend despite the soft underfoot conditions.

Our U-8 boys travelled to Passage West to play a series of games against Passage. The boys displayed super effort and skill and had an enjoyable morning’s hurling. Many thanks to Passage for hosting and to the parents for bringing the boys down.

Our U-10 boys were also on the road, travelling to Castlemartyr to play Kiltha Óg. A great run out for the boys who displayed super effort and skills which augurs well for the season ahead.

Watergrasshill U14s had a tough night at home to Kiltha Óg in the opening fixture of the East Cork Div 1 League last Friday. Playing with the wind in the first half, the visitors racked up an impressive score in the opening 10 minutes. In fairness to our lads, they dug in and slowed down Kiltha Óg's pace. We managed to put a couple of scores over the bar in the second half but there's no getting away from the fact that the boys have their work cut out for them over the coming weeks. No better men to rise to the challenge!

Our U-16’s opened their 2023 league campaign with a strong performance against Erin’s Own last Friday. Running out 5-12 to 2-11 winners.

Our Juniors also claimed their first win of the season overcoming Aghada 1-17 to 4-15 in Rostellan on Sunday afternoon. Great to see the lads get a strong performance and result under their belts having put in tremendous effort over the past few weeks.

U18: Watergrasshill 3-9 (18) Kiltha Óg 3-12 (21)

Our U18s travelled to Dungourney last Thursday evening to play Kiltha Óg.

A tough game played with intensity saw some excellent play from our lads. Liam Foley scored an impressive point from a side-line cut. Kiltha Óg built up a lead of three points in the first half with the Hill pushing hard to close the gap. Shane O’Callaghan scored a point with Ciarán Linehan scoring a goal from his corner-forward position. Cian Cronin-O’Neill was in excellent form on frees, scoring 1-1 in the first half and 1-2 in the second half.

Half-time saw the Hill behind by three points (2-5 to 2-8). The second half was a much more intense affair with Cian Cronin-O’Neill scoring 1-2 from frees and setting up a rebound point for Ethan Bowman. It was a one-point game with six minutes to go before Kiltha Óg notched up two more points to see them win out on a score line of 3-12 to 3-9.

2023 Membership now due

Our 2023 club membership is now due and we would encourage everyone to renew as soon as possible. Our playing, non-playing and social membership options are available again this year. It’s not just important for players to complete their membership for insurance and registration purposes, but social and non-playing members are just as important to ensure we have up to date member numbers, this help with Capital grant applications to GAA organisations and external private funding to help us continue to develop the best possible facilities for our community.

This year we have simplified the registration process by moving to the Foireann platform, which is provided by the GAA. Everyone will already have profiles set-up on Foireann from the days of COVID health questionnaires, but anyone who needs extra support to resister can just contact any club officer and we’ll gladly help you out.

Rebels Bounty 2023 – we have a prize winner

Many thanks to everyone who supported the Rebels Bounty Draw this year. An initiative of Cork GAA and One Cork, The Rebels Bounty draw has proven to be an important fundraiser for the club in recent years, with all proceeds above minimum sales quota going directly back to the club. With that in mind, we were delighted to see that we had a winner in the first set of draws last Thursday evening when Sabrina Kelleher scooped €1,000 for 4th place in the March draw. Congratulations to Sabina and here’s hoping we can further winners in the months ahead.

Lotto

There was no winner of the Lotto Jackpot this week. Numbers drawn were 11, 17, 18 & 21. Lucky dip winners are Barry Curtin, Mike Kennedy, Noreen O’Callaghan & K. Sheehan. Congrats to you all. Next week's jackpot is €3,300 and draw will take place on April 10th in The Fir Tree Bar.

Tickets are on sale in some of the village businesses like The Hut Bar, The Fir Tree, Johnny's Shop and our new Lotto stand in Ross's Centra. Tickets can also be purchased on-line via our club website (www.watergrasshillgaa.ie). The Club would like to take this opportunity to thank all our members and supporters of the Watergrasshill GAA Club Lotto. The Club Lotto is a vital source of income for the running of all our teams within the Club and for future development of our facilities, so we ask you to please support it if you are in a position to do so. Remember, if you’re not in you can’t win.
