Exciting Developments in Watergrasshill GAA

Last week was a milestone moment in the history of Watergrasshill GAA as ground was broken on our new Astro turf training pitch. The construction of a new 1800m2 all-weather flood-lit training pitch is the next phase of a multi-year capital program for the club, the culmination of which will coincide with our 100th anniversary in 2028. As with all community based groups, we aim to provide the best possible environment & facilities for our community and having completed the footpath & cycleway to the village as well as installation of our new gym facility, we are well on the road to providing for the community for many years to come. As the heavy machinery moved on site last week, it was the culmination of over 12 months of behind the scene’s work by many people including Kieran O’Keeffe, Dan Linehan, Niall O’Riordan, Barry Joyce and Don O’Riordan who are co-ordinating the project.

At a ceremony in August this year, on the final day of Cúl Camp surrounded by over 220 of our youngest members, Lizzie O’Leary and John O’Neill performed the ceremonial sod turning ceremony. A very symbolic moment where our most established members began the process of making provision for our youngest members. With the completion of the Astro project in early 2023, all of our teams will have a fantastic facility which will also benefit our entire community for many years to come.

Under 6 & Under 7 team finish their year

Well done to our Under 6 and Under 7 teams who finished up their seasons recently with some fun, games & goodies in the Community Center. The fun and energy these kids bring to the club is fantastic and we hope you will all be practicing your skills over the Winter. Big Thank You to all of the parents who have supported, dropped, collected and encouraged the kids during the year. Thank You also to the coaches who are giving their time to help these kids learn the skills of our games. Enjoy the well-earned break & we'll see you all again next year for training our new Astro pitch.

U-16’s bow out

Hard luck to our U-16 team who lost out to Lisgoold in the U-16 championship last Saturday. The game was finely balanced at the break with Lisgoold ahead by the narrowest of margins 0-8 to 1-6. In the second half, Lisgoold’s accuracy from placed balls coupled with a resolute defensive effort kept the ‘hill at bay and prevented the elusive green flag which Watergrasshill needed to kickstart their comeback. Lisgoold held on to win 0-12 to 1-16 and now progress to meet Cobh in the semi-final.

Before the game, Lisgoold made a contribution to the Oscar fund in aid of Oscar Whelan. Oscar, who is captain of the Watergrasshill United Under-16 team and also plays football with Glenville was diagnosed with cancer recently and has been going-through chemotherapy and has a long recover journey ahead. The Oscar fund was set up by local clubs to support Oscar and his family in the coming months with their medical expenses to ensure Oscar has everything needed to make a full recovery. Thank You to Lisgoold for a very thoughtful gesture, it is very much appreciated.
