Fé15 boys secure East Cork Title

Rebel Óg East Fé15 D2 HC Final

Watergrasshill: 4-18(30) Cobh: 1-14(17)

Our U-15 boys turned in a superb performance on Saturday afternoon in Mayfield to take the Rebel Óg East Fé15 Cup Final against a strong Cobh side.

Cobh started at pace and were on the attack from the off. They registered the first score of the game from a 65 after just 1 minute and doubled their lead on 2 minutes with a point from play to lead 0-0 to 0-2. Watergrasshill finally got going though and added 1-2 within 2 minutes to lead 1-2 to 0-2 after 4 minutes and that set the tone for the remainder of the half. A second goal followed from Tadgh McCarthy and with Shane O’Callaghan accurate from placed balls, Watergrasshill had stretched the lead to 0-6 to 2-3 after 15 minutes. The ‘Hill lads really pushed on in the 2nd quarter, David Barry and Cathal Sheehan were rock solid on the half-back line and made Cobh work hard for any scores they picked up. At the break, Watergrasshill were ahead 0-9 to 2-11 and were full value for the lead, but with a slight breeze in Cobh’s favour for the 2nd half, there was no room for complacency. At the start of the 2nd half, the sides exchanged scores whilst the ‘Hill boys settled faster. Donacha O’Leary was now finding some space  and linking well with Billy Ryan, but the game was turned on its head on 10 minutes when 2 goals in 2 minutes put 14 points between the sides, 0-11 to 4-13. Cobh pushed hard to recover and were intent on goals, but Leon Clark O’Shea pulled off 2 great stops and with Dara O’Neill, Liam Kelleher and Sean Callanan repelling attack after attack, it was looking ominous for Cobh. When Cobh registered their 1st green flag of the game on 25 minutes, it was too little too late as Watergrasshill closed out the game to win on a score line of 1-14 to 4-18.

There’s great credit due to the Watergrasshill lads, whose work rate was off the charts, from 1 to 22, not a single ball was given up nor a 50/50 conceded. With all of the lads trusting their team mates, picking the right passes and never panicking when under pressure, it was great to see the celebrations at full time. The boys now progress to a county ¼ final against Kinsale which is currently fixed for Sunday 16th October at 12 noon in Belgooly.

We wish the boys the very best of luck in the county ¼ final and hopefully the work that they have put in during the year will stand to them. Regardless, everyone in the club are very proud of the lads and wish them and the management team the very best of luck.

Club legends in Naas Masters

Last weekend saw some club legends head to Naas for the Naas Masters, Autumn Social Hurling Blitz. The emphasis was on Social, but there was a bit of hurling to be completed first. The lads won all 5 games, without conceding a score, mostly due to the number of volunteers to play across the full-back line. Well done to the lads for travelling and representing the club so well. It was great to see the lads pull on the Red & White again having given years to the club both on the field and off.
