Croke Park Appearances
Memories of a lifetime were made recently when our players Sam O’Leary and Matthew Counihan represented Watergrasshill NS & Glenville NS respectively in the INTO Cumann na mBunscol, GAA Respect, Exhibition Go Games in Croke Park. Sam played at half-time during the Galway V Limerick Senior All-Ireland Semi-Final with Matthew playing during the Kilkenny V Limerick Senior All-Ireland Final. The two boys are fantastic kids and everyone associated with both Watergrasshill GAA & Glenville GAA are so proud of their achievement and hope that they and their families enjoyed their big day out and who knows, maybe we’ll see Sam or Matthew in Croke Park again. If their current skill levels and dedication to both codes are anything to go by, this may not be their final trip to Jones’ Road.
Results Round Up
Starting with our underage teams, the pick of the bunch over the past 2 weeks must be our U-15 team, who came out on top in a titanic battle against Lisgoold in the Final of the D2 league last Sunday morning. On a blistering hot morning, it really was a battle of styles with our fast paced, short passing game coming up against a strong, physical Lisgoold outfit. The slight breeze, which was very welcome favoured the Hill in the first half & with Jack Counihan excelling at half-forward, David Barry securing the half-back line & Zach Curtin playing a stormer at corner back, we took advantage of the breeze to lead 0-9 to 1-3 at the break. Lisgoold started the 2nd half the stronger, adding 6 points to our 1-1 before the water break, with a Mike O’Riordan goal setting up a nail-biting final quarter with the score at 1-10 to 1-9 in our favour. Lisgoold drew level with the first score of the 4th quarter, but these boys never give up and a quick-fire 1-2 in the space of 4 minutes, including a superb goal from Tadgh McCarthy stretched the lead back out to 5 points with 9 minutes left on the clock. Lisgoold responded brilliantly though to narrow the gap to just 2 points with just minutes remaining – but the hill boys dug in deep and with some heroic defending including from Billy Ryan at both Full Back and later mid-field and held on to come out on top 2-13 to 1-14. A great win for the boys whose skill, tenacity and never-say-die attitude helped them to come through to pick up the first silverware of the 2022 season.
Elsewhere in underage action, our U-13 boys lost out to Lisgoold on July 8th by 3-12 to 2-9, a tough encounter at home against table-toppers St. Catherine’s awaits on July 23rd and we wish the boys all the best for that game.
Our U-12 boys finished Phase 2 of their league campaign undefeated with a win over Youghal (7-3 to 4-6). A super campaign from the boys saw them tour Cork harbour adding wins over Cobh (2-8 to 2-6) and Aghada (2-9 to 4-6) to their win over Youghal.
On field activities in their respective league campaigns for our intermediate and junior teams also concluded in July. It was a tough campaign for both teams with our intermediates losing out to Kilworth (1-12 to 1-14) and the Juniors losing out to Sars (3-23 to 1-15).
Championship action for our Juniors starts on August 7th when they face Carraig Na bhFear with Killeagh, Fr. O’Neill’s, Erin’s Own and Carraig Na bhFear also in Group 1. Our Intermediates get their Championship campaign underway on July 30th when they face Éire Óg. We wish both teams the very best of luck in their respective Championships.
Our U-19’s got their Championship campaign off to a winning start with a victory over Aghada (2-15 to 0-9) with a tantalizing clash against St. Catherine’s awaiting in the semi-final (date to be fixed)
