Rebel Óg East
 Fé 16 League D1 Final

Cobh 6-18 (36) Watergrasshill 5-17 (32)

In a truly epic encounter last Saturday, our U-16’s were pipped at the post after extra-time in the final of the Rebel Óg East Fé 16 Division 1 League. On a beautiful sunny Saturday morning in Cobh, this game was always going to be close with the team who took most advantage of the westerly breeze destined to come out on top.

Cobh were out of the blocks fast with the aid of the breeze in the first half, leading 1-2 to 0-1 within 5 mins, however a goal from Ciaran O’Riordan and a point each from Brendan Lehane and Ciaran O’Leary levelled matters after 7 mins. Cobh rattled the net again in the 24th minute, however again Watergrasshill dug deep and a Brendan Lehane goal contributed to the sides being level at half-time with 2-6 each.

In the second half, the skill level and scoring intensity of the first half showed no signs on dropping off. Yet again Cobh were first to settle, rattling the net just 30 seconds after the restart however it was that man Brendan Lehane who notched his second goal of the day to keep pegging Cobh back. The lead was exchanged 7 times in the second half, but with time up Cian Cronin-O’Neill hit a huge equalising free from our own 45m line to level the game. In truth, neither side deserved to lose this one, however with extra-time and 65’s if needed, this game was to be decided on the day.

The first half of extra time is where Cobh really lay down a marker, utilising the growing breeze to outscore Watergrasshill 2-4 to 0-1 to lead 6-16 to 3-16 at the break. But the Watergrasshill side never give in and managed to get the deficit back to just one goal before an insurance point from Cobh in the dying moments left the final score Cobh 6-18 Watergrasshill 5-17.

In summing up this team, having started the game with just 7 of the side full U-16 players backed-up by their U-15 and U-14 team-mates, this side can absolutely hold their heads high. The heart, skill and determination showed by this group of players was a sight to behold this year and we have no doubt, that there will be brighter days ahead for these fine young men from Watergrasshill.

Scorers on the day: Brendan Lehane 4-9, Ciaran O’Riordan 1-1, Colm O’Regan & Sam Dennehy 0-2 each, Ciaran O’Leary, Cian Cronin-O’Neill & Liam Foley 0-1 each.

Rebel Óg East Fé 18 Hurling Championship D2 Semi-Final

Castlelyons 2-14(20) Watergrasshill 3-17(26)

Our minors produced a superb performance on last Wednesday evening to defeat their hosts Castlelyons and progress to the East Cork final against St. Catherine’s. Castlelyons were fast to settle, registering 0-4 without reply before Watergrasshill’s first score after 6 minutes. Whilst it took the lads 6 minutes to register our first score, a Brendan Lehane point was followed by 1-2 in 4 minutes to leave Watergrasshill leading by 0-5 to 1-3 after 10 minutes and by 0-6 to 1-4 at the first half water-break. Our lads were on a roll now and quickly added 0-3 without reply. At this point, only Colm McCarthy’s free taking was keeping Castlelyons in the game but a Daire O’Leary penalty on 25 minutes meant we led by 0-10 to 2-9 at half-time.

On the resumption, Castlelyons quickly notched up 1-2 within 3 minutes to level affairs however that’s as close as our opponents got as Watergrasshill powered through in the 3rd quarter. With James Barry making some great saves now and our forwards beginning to cause Castlelyons serious problems, we added 1-7 without reply which included Joseph O’Riordan’s second goal of the night, in a blistering 15-minute spell. Despite a late flurry from our hosts, Watergrasshill finished strongly to win on a score line of Castlelyons 2-14(20) Watergrasshill 3-17(26).

A superb performance from our lads, no mean feat to get a victory in Castlelyons and we now move on to face St. Catherine’s in the final on Sept. 16th in Carrigtwohill at 7pm.

Pitch Signage & Advertising Opportunity

As we enter a new decade, we do so with great optimism and excitement here at Watergrasshill GAA Club. Later this decade we will celebrate our centenary year, which will be a special milestone. While it's important to celebrate the past and the history of the club, its also important we look forward to the future. With this in mind, the club will shortly be undertaking a development project, to prepare the club for the future and further position ourselves at the centre of our community. Part of this project, will be the development of our existing club grounds. To that end we will endeavour to raise a revenue stream from advertising, while giving businesses the opportunity to advertise their services and reach a wider audience within our community. With the playing numbers on the increase our facility will be a busy spot over the coming years and we would love to have your name and business positioned in the hearts and minds of all those who visit on a weekly basis. We are offering advertising space via pitch signage, 3000mm wide x 750mm high. These are a 5-year gloss laminate, flash mounted to 0.2mm skin diabond sign. If you would be interested in this opportunity to advertise and support our club, please contact Claire O Leary on 087-6239297 or any member of the club who can provide assistance.
