Intermediates in Hurling League

Our Intermediates played their second league game of the year, last Wednesday, our opponents were Kildorrery. Going into this game, we were without a few players through injury, namely Paddy O Regan & Aron Ricken and also lost Padraig O Leary to UCC in the Freshers A hurling championship semi-final played the same night. We started the game on the front foot, and took a 4 points to 1 lead inside the first 10 minutes, our points coming from Sean Desmond, Anthony Cronin, Shane Og & a free from Shane O Regan.  Kildorrery then started to influence proceedings and got back into game, noticeably closing down our lads quickly and capitalising on our poor discipline, which cost us a few scores from frees. Going in at halftime it was all square at 8pts each, following good scores from Darie O Leary and Sean Desmond closing out the half.  It was hard not to wonder if two missed good goal chances in the first half might cost us. The second half was a hard battle around the middle third of the field with the game hinging on the second balls which we didn’t win enough of and Kildorrery picking off  3 good points. Shane O Regan did keep us in touching distance and the scoreboard ticking over with two frees, but then we succumbed to a sucker punch, conceding a goal. It unfortunately came from losing our own puck out, and switching of to allow our opponents a free and clear path towards goal where a simple off load to a free teammate left us no chance. From here we really were chasing the game, but to the lads credit the kept battling to the end and tried hard to get back in the ascendency. Shane Og missed a penalty after winning it himself with five minutes left on the clock. Kildorrery however kicked on in the dying minutes and picked off three more points to finish out winners on a scoreline of 1-13 to 0-14.

Teams (& scorers): Darragh O Callaghan, Colin Cronin, Brian Fenton, Pa Cronin, Shane Field, Garry Kelly Lynch, James McCarty, Antony Cronin (0-1), Don O Riordan, Shane o Regan (0-6), Kevin o Neill (0-1), Aiden Foley, Darie o Leary (0-1), Shane Og Regan (0-3), Sean Desmond (0-2). Subs used Chris Healy & William Connolly.

Scór na bPaisti

Hard luck to our Rince Foirne, pictured,  (Ava O Callaghan, Olivia Murphy, Ellie O Callaghan, Lauren Murphy, Emily McCormack, Lucy Knox, Erin ORiordan, Caoimhe Street) who bowed out of the Scór na bPaístí at the County Semi Final. You were brilliant girls and should be very proud of your achievements in the competition this year. Our Rince Aonair, Emily McCormack, progresses through to the County Final, which is on in Ovens at 2pm on March 21st. Best of luck Emily.

Scor is now an integral part of the GAA fabric and it was back in 1969, we saw the initiation of our talent competition. These competitions were the brainchild of the North Cork Divisional Chairman Derry Gowen from Fermoy. These were first held in that division before a capacity audience at the Majestic Ballroom, Mallow. At the County Convention that year, a motion that the competitions should be expanded to County and All-Ireland level was carried unanimously. It was passed at the GAA Congress the following Easter. The rules were made and the competition was called Scór. It now has three sections of competition: Scór Sinsear, Scór na nÓg, and Scór na Páisti. The categories of competition: Rince Fóirne (Figure Dancing), Amhránaíocht Aonair (Solo Singing), Ceol Uirilse (Instrumental Music), Nuachleas (Novelty Act), Aithriseoireacht (Recitation), Bailéad Ghrúpa (Ballad Group), Rince Seit (Set Dancing), Tráth na gCeisteanna (Question Time). In the early years, Glenville GAA and ourselves took part in Scór occasionally and the only success in those early years came when Donal O’Brien won the East Cork Aithriseoireacht title in 1971. Since then, thankfully over the years we have had plenty of club representative and plenty divisional, county & provincial winning talent from the club and the parish.
