Juniors off to winning start in Championship

Our Junior A team got off to a winning start in the Junior Championship with a magnificent performance in a sunny but windy Rathcormac last Saturday. Retaining the momentum gained by last year’s B grade county championship victory, the boys hit the ground running with an assured performance against near neighbors, Carraig na bhFear. Playing against a stiff breeze, the first half was a tit for tat affair with both teams cancelling each other out on the scoreboard. The first goal of the game went the way of the Hill just before halftime, with Chris Healy rattling the net and this left the game level at half time on a score line of 1-4 to 7pts. The second half was an entirely different affair with the Hill playing some excellent hurling, pulling away in the third quarter.  Colm Fenton’s puck outs were excellent, he made a key save mid-way through the second half and he also put over some important frees. Not a bad contribution from a goalkeeper! The full back line was rock solid with Diarmuid McCarthy and Mike Murphy consistently out first to the ball and Denis O’Farrell sweeping across the line and clearing the world of ball. Sean O’Callaghan, Shane Field and Mike Kennedy showed their class in the half back line. Don O’Riordan and Dan Dennehy were super, moving the ball quickly and chipping in with some scores for good measure. We had an “experienced” pair of wing forwards in Willie O’Leary and Kieran Coakley. What a pair of warriors they are!! Willie possibly getting the score of the day, catching a ball straight from a puck out, losing his man and sticking it over the ball, not bad for an auld fella. Between these two old stagers, we had young Eoin O’Reilly who did an excellent job of occupying the sweeper and centre back deployed by Carraig. We had a youthful full forward line of Chris Healy, Cillian Roche and Sean Desmond. Chris got an early goal to settle the team. Cillian was accurate from frees and play. Sean Desmond caused havoc, every time he was near the ball and would be worthy of a nod for Man of the Match.  James Gowen, Tim Healy and TJ Forde all entered the fray and made positive contributions to a great victory. Sadly, due to bereavement, we had to field without, Barry O’Regan, Jason Foley, Aiden Foley and Owen Desmond. We look forward to having them back in the fold the next day. Final score was 2-15 to 12pts. We now progress to the quarter final but await winners from the back door round to enter the draw. Congrats lads on a great victory and best of luck in the remaining Championship. Hon the Hill.

Watergrasshill U14’s win League Plate

Watergrasshill U14’s played out a cracking game against Whitechurch in Delaneys pitch last Friday, June 21st, in a fixture which doubled up as U14 championship and U14 League Plate final. In a game which was much closer than the scoreline suggests, the Hill came out on top over 60 minutes on a scoreline of Watergrasshill 1-16, Whitechurch 0-9pts.The first half was a tight affair, with Whitechurch playing with a stiff breeze and showing no end of skill and commitment across the pitch. Scores were difficult to come by with the back lines on top for large periods of the first half. Whitechurch had the better of the half, going in with a two point lead at half time, 0-05 to 0-07.

The second half was a different story, with Watergrasshill starting to take control of the game, levelling it up 0-07 each after 5 minutes. Whitechurch got the next point but after that, the Hill took control of the game with 2 points, which was quickly followed by a cracking goal by Liam Foley who was returning to the game after illness. The goal gave the team a great lift who then tacked on another 4 points without reply to put the game beyond a very good Whitechurch team. At the final whistle, Watergrasshill won out by 10 points. Great performances across the pitch by all the players, but standout performances by Liam Foley, Michael O Driscoll, Sam Dennehy and Cian Cronin O Neill were instrumental in the victory. Panel: Fionn Fitzgerald, Rory Leahy, Cian Cronin O Neill, Conor O Mahony, Conor Hurley, Sam Dennehy, Conor Kroll, Ryan Loftus, Michael O Driscoll, Ciaran O Riordan, Ethan Bowman, Shane O Callaghan, Bobby Kelleher, Ciaran O Leary, Cathal O Brien, Liam Foley (c), Liam Casey, Dean Field, David Moore, Donagh Burke, Darragh Collins, Ciaran Linehan, Coran O Neill, Darragh O Bric.

U11’s take on Inniscarra

Our U11’s played two games against Inniscarra last week. Team one comprised of Sean Callanan, Dylan McCarthy, Adam Casey, Louie Guichard, Darragh Murphy, Cillian O Connor, John Kelleher, Zac Curtin, Jack Lucey & Daniel O Connor. This game started badly for our boys with a very sharp Inniscarra side bagging 3 goals in the first 5 minutes. The lads kept their heads and worked hard to get back in the game. Sean Callanan was colossal at full back, Dylan Mc Carthy and Adam Casey were winning control of midfield and Louie Guichard was a constant threat up front. Unfortunately, a number of narrow wides (Darragh Murphy was particularly unlucky with a clever flick-on going just wide of the post) combined with some good saves by the Inniscarra goalkeeper meant the Hill boys trailled by 6-01 to 1-03 at half time. Most teams would give up faced with a 13 point half time deficit, but these boys are made of stronger stuff. They took to the field for the second half and gave their all. Cillian O Connor in goals and the back line of Sean Callanan, John Kelleher, Zac Curtin and Darragh Murphy were like men possessed and limited Inniscarra to 2-02 in the second half as well as clearing great ball to set up several attacks. In midfield Adam Casey was excellent in general play and got some wonderful scores. Adam also epitomized the bravery in this team when he overcame two nasty knocks to play on until the end. Daniel O Connor showed magnificent touches and skill and made some mazey runs leaving the Inniscarra midfield chasing shadows. Up front Louie Guichard continued his first half form, stretching the Inniscarra defence with strong running as well as grabbing some fantastic scores. Jack Lucy was in fine form and grabbed a great goal and point to further narrow the gap. Last but not least, Dylan Mc Carthy followed up an excellent first half with an even better second half. His work rate, scoring, picking and striking from tight positions was the foundation for a second half revival. Unfortunately, Inniscarra goaled a late free and this was enough to give them a 3 point win, the final score Watergrasshill 6-06 Inniscarra 8-03. This was a fantastic display of skill and character from this bunch of lads and they represented the club superbly tonight.
Team 2 was made up of Dylan Joyce, Conor Webb-Duggan, Dara O’Neill, Donnacha O’Leary, David Barry, Josh Madden, Jayden Hennebry, Liam Kelleher, Jack Counihan & Tadhg McCarthy. This game was a tough and tight affair from the off, as both teams tried to impart their superiority on the game. There was great moments of skill throughout, in particular the high level hooks, blocks and passing. Both teams picked off some great scores on the night but Inniscarra were the more industrious on the night and played excellently to take the spoils on this one. Well done to all the boys on a great evenings hurling.

U10’s out in Cloughduv

Our U10’s made the trip out to Cloughduv last week and took on the hosts in a 12 a side game. The team was depleted numbers wise with two U8’s Sam O Leary and Cormac McCarthy taking the call up and travelling with the team. Once again the boys put in a strong performance with some fine scores on show including some great blocking and hooking when required. One feature of the game was the strength of the boys passing which was great to watch and it lead to some fine scores. It was an evenly matched game and a thoroughly enjoyable one to watch, played in lovely conditions in Cloughduv. Thank you to Sam and Cormac for taking up the call to arms and once again played brilliantly getting stuck in amongst bigger lads. Well done team, and remember keep practicing every chance you get (don’t worry about those windows at home).
