Watergrasshill U8 hurlers who took to the Páirc ui Chaoimh 4G pitch on Saturday morning to participate in the Rebel Og blitz. With 23 kids on the day, we had 3 teams who played great hurling and most importantly enjoyed themselves and had fun. The future is bright and we are looking forward to the new year ahead, well done boys!

Our Under 10’s had their first hurling game of the year on Saturday. The venue was Rathcormac and the opposition was Bride Rovers. The boys hurled well, blew off the cobwebs and competed very well with their near neighbours. Thanks to Bride Rovers who were very welcoming and well organized. Panel; Harry Wain, Gearoid Fitzgerald, Callum O’Callaghan, Fergal, Duffy, Cormac McCarthy, Tadhg McCarthy, Matthew Counihan, James Buckley, Lorcan Herlihy, Scott O’Mahony, Liam Sheehan, Joe Beecher, Will, Tom Fennell, Darren Cahill, Josh Madden, Oisin O’Bric.

Watergrasshill U11s welcomed Eire Óg to the Hill Saturday for our first hurling game of the year. This was the first time these two teams met which added some extra excitement to the fixture. It was also a morning when we introduced a new initiative, the SILENT SIDELINE.Silent Sidelines are used in other sports and the aim is to allow the kids to play the game in an enjoyable and fun atmosphere. The main points are, Absolutely NO shouting or directing from the sidelines, Clapping allowed for scores and positive effort from both sides, NO directing or coaching advice from supporters at any time, and NO questioning of the official in charge of the game in any shape or form by anyone. Both Watergrasshill teams played well and came away with two deserved victories. Thank you to Eire Og for two very sporting games which produced some fine passages of play from both clubs. Special mention for Darragh Murphy who made his debut for Watergrasshill. Squad: Louie Guichard, Gearoid Fitzgerald, Sean Callinan, Eoghan Forde, Adam Casey, Dylan Mc Carthy, Jack Lucy O Driscoll, Matthew Counihan, Darragh Murphy, Donnacha O Leary, Conor Webb Duggan, Tadhg Mc Carthy, Cormac Mc Carthy, Jack Counihan, Matthew Counihan, David Barry, Jayden Hennerby, John Kelleher, Josh Madden, Liam Kelleher.

The feedback to the Silent Sideline was really positive. Interestingly, those that refereed the games on the day thought it was great so that in itself tells us all something. Parents & Supporters for the most part thought it was really positive although it was commented that it did take from the atmosphere a little. The feedback from the most important people, the players from both teams themselves, ranged from "good" to "brilliant" to "didn't make a difference". The big takeaway is, we have to let the kids play and enjoy themselves but there is a place for positive encouragement and acknowledgment too. So going forward we are going to continue with this concept but allow a "Positive Sideline" to exist also. Thanks again to all who followed the initiative and please continue to come and show your support of the great kids in our community.

Senior Hurling Championship

Our division and reigning Cork senior Hurling champions Imokilly played in round 1 of the championship last week against Carrigdhoun. They ran out winners on a score line of 0-31 to 1-13. We had three clubmates getting game-time, Darragh O Callaghan in goals and the two Shane O Regan’s. Well done lads. Next up in round 2 is Carberry in Pairc Ui Rinn on Tuesday 2nd April (result unknown at time of writing).

The Nursery

Calling all boys, born in 2013 & 2014 (even 2015 if you feel they would like to come and have a go). Our U6's are back in action for 2019 and get together every Saturday @10am in the Watergrasshill GAA pitch and every Wednesday @6pm in Glenville. We have some hurleys and helmets for kids who might want to try it out for a couple of weeks. Its €2 per child/family every training. For more information please contact Liam on 0867992132 or Noel on 0872479045. I would encourage all parents of boys in this age group to bring them along. Its great fun, they learn new skills, learn to be part of a team and they make friends for life. We would also love to see any parents willing to give a hand in any way they can, to come forward. It would be greatly appreciated and who knows you might make new friends along the way too. Hope to see you there.
